Description
Aponogeton distachyos is an aquatic plant growing from a tuberous rhizome. The often mottled, dark green leaves float on the water surface on a stalk that can be up to a meter long, the leaf blade is narrow pointed oval shape. The flowers are produced on an erect, split spike above the water surface; they are scented, with one or two white petals and six or more dark purple brown stamens.

Large areas of water in the Western Southern & Eastern Cape are covered with Aponogeton distachyos
